During
Neal's off-season, which is post Labor Day through pre Memorial Day,
there is still plenty to do and see in the area and much of the time
is still warm enough for water activities. Reservation office
hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. from September to May. Ask about low weekly
and monthly rates during off season.
Victor
Emanuel Tours and many other large and small Birding groups
from all over the world, as well as individuals, make Neal's and
Concan a regular Birding stop year after year. There are two
special birds people want to see - the Black-capped Vireo and the
Golden-cheeked Warbler. As many as 250 species of birds have
been observed in the spring. We have quiet and beautiful hiking
and nature trails on the grounds. We hope you decide to join
us for some great Birding adventures.
Neal's has 61 cabins,
from rustic to some of the newest on the Frio, but all have heating,
air-conditioning, TV, bath and kitchen. Many have fireplaces.
Cabins do not have phones, however, messages for guests can be left
at the store. Cabin rentals will be at a discount in the spring
for birdwatchers, March-30% and April/May-20%.
The
dinning room is open on weekends during September, November and
December in the Fall, and after Easter in the Spring. The
dinning room will open at other times by arrangement if we have
enough people guaranteed to eat. During the Spring
we have several large nature groups eating during the weekdays.
So if you come alone or with a small group, you can eat if the larger
group happens to be there at the same time. Neal's will fix
snack lunches for those who want to go hiking or touring for the
day.
Other places
of interest in the area, with good Birding along the way:
- Lost
Maples Park, especially during the fall foliage season.
- Garner
State Park, about 7 miles upstream on the Frio.
- Reagan Wells
and The
Hummers woodworking shop while Birding along the way.
- Drive through
the Nueces River area northwest of Uvalde (Park
Chalk Bluff, Hwy 55)
- San
Antonio and the Texas Gulf Coast are within hours.
- Big
Bend National Park is about a days drive.
- Bat
Cave tours available April - September.
- Ft.
Inge and Uvalde National Fish Hatchery, great for birdwatching
and picnicking.
